The iPhone 14 lineup also introduces Emergency SOS via satellite, which combines custom components deeply integrated with software to allow antennas to connect directly to a satellite, enabling messaging with emergency services when outside of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. When a severe crash is detected, the emergency services call interface will appear on Apple Watch, as it is most likely to be in closer proximity to the user, while the call is placed through iPhone if it is in range for the best possible connection. When combined with Apple Watch, Crash Detection seamlessly leverages the unique strength of both devices to get users help efficiently. Advanced Apple-designed motion algorithms trained with over a million hours of real-world driving and crash record data provide even better accuracy. These capabilities build on existing components, like the barometer, which can now detect cabin pressure changes, the GPS for additional input for speed changes, and the microphone, 4 which can recognize loud noises typified by severe car crashes. With a new dual-core accelerometer capable of detecting G-force measurements of up to 256Gs and a new high dynamic range gyroscope, Crash Detection on iPhone can now detect a severe car crash and automatically dial emergency services when a user is unconscious or unable to reach their iPhone. There were a lot of things going on in 1863, so it’s to be forgiven if you weren’t aware of a speech that Major General John Watts de Peyster of the New York Militia gave to the Vermont State Historical Society in October of that year.Īt the time of de Peyster’s speech, the Civil War was well into its Chattanooga campaign, a long slog of conflicts in the fall of 1863 that the Union won, raising the profile of future president Ulysses S. (via Find a Grave) The wealthy former soldier and military historian who influenced the Civil War far away from the battle lines Today’s Tedium ponders our constant hunt for historical parallels to understand the world. So, for an issue, I’m going to lean into it. Tedium is not a news platform and has never promoted itself as such, so I find this spontaneous grasping for parallels interesting. For some reason, without being explicitly promoted this way, these two stories have drawn interest from readers looking for a way to contextualize what is looking to be the biggest news story of the past two decades: the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19, the disease popularly known as the coronavirus. First, I wrote about the saga of Ayds, the “diet” candy that was removed from the market amidst the AIDS crisis, which spoiled its brand strategy and second, I wrote about the tale of American Samoa, which effectively avoided the worst of the 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak due to some quick thinking on the part of a government appointee. In part, it’s because I’ve seen things that I’ve written take this status of historical parallel for some people without me really having to do much to push it. With 60 black-and-white images to illustrate design development, this book would be an essential read for academics and students of architecture with a particular interest in further understanding the inner workings of the architectural creative process.Today in Tedium: I’ve been thinking a lot about the way that history can create parallels we can build upon and learn from. The book also draws on a range of anthropological ideas including skilled practice and enchantment in order to explore why axonometrics are important to architecture and questions the degree to which the drawing convention influences the forms produced by architects. Using James Stirling, JJP Oud, Peter Eisenman, John Hejduk, and Cedric Price as case studies, Lucas highlights each architect's creative practices which he anaylses with reference to Bergson's concepts of temporality and cretivity, discussing ther manner in which creative problems are explored and solved. The practice of drawing offers significantly different insights, not easily accessible through discourse analysis, critical theory, or observation. Ray Lucas argues that by retracing the marks made by architects, we can begin to engage more directly with their practice as it is only by redrawing the work that hidden aspects are revealed. The book focuses on parallel projections such as axonometric, isometric, and oblique drawings. Drawing Parallels expands your understanding of the workings of architects by looking at their work from an alternative perspective. You can create multiple class diagrams for a project that can be used to display a distinct view of the project, a chosen subset of the project's types, or a chosen subset of the members of types. For more information, see Add a class diagram. The first step in presenting project information is to create a class diagram that displays what you want to show. You can use class diagrams to customize, share, and present project information with others. These projects might have been created by other developers, or you just need a refresher on a project you created yourself. Class diagram workflowĬlass diagrams can help you understand the class structure of projects. Likewise, the diagram does not display changes to the code of the external entity until you rebuild the project for that entity. If your project contains a class diagram and your project references a type that's located in another project, the class diagram does not show the referenced type until you build the project for that type. Similarly, the class diagram is kept in sync with changes you make to code files. This means that you can edit types in the designer and then see your edits reflected in the source code of the entity. The visualization of these entities is a dynamic view into the code. Refactor: Override methods, rename identifiers, refactor parameters, and implement interfaces and abstract classes.Ĭlass diagrams show the details of types, for example, their constituent members, and the relationships between them. Save your diagram to use later for demonstration or documentation. Customize your diagram so that you can focus on the project details that you care about the most. That’s why a parsec has that value, and not any other.Īlthough astronomers often measure distant objects in parsecs or megaparsecs (1 megaparsec is 1 million parsecs), only nearby objects have parallaxes that we can actually measure. And a parsec is the distance - 3.26 light-years - that a star must lie from the Sun for its parallax angle to be exactly 1″. The two different sightlines, one at each end of Earth’s orbit, create a triangle the parallax angle is defined as half the angle at the triangle’s apex. If you draw a simple diagram, you’ll see that the distance the star appears to move is related to the angle at which it is viewed. Translated to the stars in the sky, two photographs of the same nearby star taken six months apart will show it appearing to move against the background of more distant stars because Earth has moved to the other side of the Sun in its orbit. Your finger will appear to shift because each eye views it from a slightly different angle. Next, open your left eye and close your right. Close just your left eye and observe where your finger appears against the background. One of the simplest ways to see for yourself how this works is to hold your hand at arm’s length in front of your face and raise one finger. This is because as our planet moves, our viewpoint changes. Over the course of several months, nearby stars appear to move with respect to more distant objects - an effect called parallax. Earth circles the Sun, making one complete orbit per year. Question: Why is a parsec 3.26 light-years and not some other number?Īnswer: A parsec, or “parallax second,” is defined as 3.26 light-years because of how it is measured. To play these notes, the bass guitar player strums the controller without pressing any fret button keys. Additionally, the bass guitar player is required to play notes representing an open E string, which is shown on-screen as a solid line across their note track. One addition to the guitar gameplay is the ability to play notes while holding a sustained note. As with previous Guitar Hero titles, the guitar and bass player must hold down the correct fret button(s) on the controller while strumming in time with the notes as they scroll on-screen. The guitar interface remains relatively unchanged in World Tour. Successfully completing a song garners a three to five-star rating based on the accumulated score, and rewards such as in-game money that can be used to buy new guitars and outfits for characters. A player that performs poorly and reduces their performance meter to zero can still continue to play, but they drain the overall performance meter for the band, requiring the other players to make up for this. Similar to Rock Band, the band shares a common score, scoring multiplier and band performance meter while each player has their own performance metric the band also shares the same "Star Power" meter, though any player may activate it at any time. This multiplier is doubled when the player activates star power. Completing a consecutive series of notes successfully will increase a scoring multiplier for that player up to 4x. If the Rock Meter drops too low, the song ends prematurely, with the virtual audience booing the band off stage. Missed notes are not scored and negatively affect the Rock Meter. Successfully hitting notes increases the player's or band's score, as well as increase the "Rock Meter" that represents the song's performance. World Tour expands beyond the core guitar-based gameplay by introducing the ability to play drums and sing vocals, and supports the ability for up to four players to play together in a virtual band through these different instruments. Guitar Hero World Tour builds on the gameplay from previous Guitar Hero games, in which players attempt to simulate the playing of rock music using special guitar-shaped controllers. See also: Common gameplay elements in the Guitar Hero series World Tour received generally positive reviews, with critics responding positively to the quality of the instrument controllers, the customization abilities, and improvements in the game's difficulty compared with the previous Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. The PlayStation 2 version uses venues that are pre-rendered videos, due to the console's technical limits. The game allows users to create new songs through the "Music Studio" mode, which can then be uploaded and shared through a service known as "GHTunes". This is in many ways similar to the competing Rock Band series of games. While the game continues to feature the use of a guitar-shaped controller to simulate the playing of rock music, Guitar Hero World Tour is the first game in the Guitar Hero series to feature drum and microphone controllers for percussion and vocal parts. A version of World Tour for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X was later released by Aspyr. The game was launched in North America in October 2008 for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360 consoles, and a month later for Europe and Australia. It is the fourth main installment in the Guitar Hero series. It is believed they extended to Europe after migrations between the continents occurred over time. European ShorthairĪnother case of the naming of a cat breed being a little misleading, the European Shorthair also has African roots in its lineage. However, those with silver tones appear to be the most popular and warrants their place on this list of gray haired cat breeds. Their coat is short as their name suggests and can be of almost any color. They can weigh up to 6 kilos, making them a medium-large sized cat. They are not the most agile, but do have a string build which makes them good for ratting and mousing. In respect to these physical characteristics, this breed is noted for their rounded head, short ears and small nose. All of these attributes make the American Shorthair a very attractive cat in terms of both looks and temperament. Much of this is to do with its very friendly and sociable personality, as well as having lots of power and intelligence. This feline breed has won the hearts of many cat guardians around the globe. This playfulness extends to their physical agility as they are also recorded as being t he fastest cat breed. They can be a very territorial breed, but they are very affectionate and playful with members of their family. This gives them a beautiful gray color with darker gray markings giving them a beautiful wild appearance. They come in about three different colors, but the silver is perhaps the most common. This breed has immense green eyes and a coat with very particular markings including the aforementioned spots as well as stripes and two varieties of forehead markings. What is known is that it is the only domestic cat with naturally occurring spots on their coat. However, there is some uncertainty of their true origin, with possible European and/or North American origins. ‘Mau’ is of Egyptian origin and they were venerated in this region for thousands of years. This is not just for its interesting physical characteristics, but also the rich and storied history which comes with it. The Egyptian Mau is one of the most fascinating breeds of cat in existence. While the colorpoint pattern of the Himalayan is distinct in its own right, there are other types of patterns which include stripes, lines or other unique features. Although you can find grey Turkish Angora cats with blue eyes, it is also possible to find specimens with green and yellow tones. They have long ears and are particularly sensitive to ambient noise. Additionally, its hind legs are taller than their front. The Turkish Angora has fine, soft and silky fur, generally more abundant in the neck and tail. This doesn't mean they don't need the right care to maintain their health, regular grooming of their long coat being one important element. They are a very healthy cat breed which is noted for having relatively few congenital health problems. As the name suggests, this gray cat breed originates from Turkey. However, there is much more variety in terms of coat color. It is easy to stereotype the Turkish Angora as being a solid white cat as there are many examples of this coloration. All Himalayan cats have blue eyes and are noted for their docile behavior. But the blue point Himalayan cat has a grey coloration in appearance, giving it a unique and beautiful look. They can come in chocolate, lilac, seal or even red. However, they always have a pointed coloration which means their coloring is darker at the extremities when compared to their body. Himalayan cats are a type of Persian breed which have the characteristics of other Persian cats in their mouth shape, hair length and general behavioral traits. The coats of Persian cats have an almost unlimited variety with tortoiseshell, calico, tabby and smoked patterning being as common as solid color cats. Healthy cats can sometimes have a large appearance, but this is more to do with their rounded heads, muscular frame and famously long coat. Descended from the Turkish Angora, they are one of the most sought after and popular cats worldwide. This is because of the difference between Traditional Persian cats and those with peke-face typing, the latter resulting in various degrees of shortening of the nose and palate. Persian cats contain much diversity within the breed, perhaps most strikingly so. We are going to start our list of grey cat breeds with those which have blue eyes. |
